The Best Time to Visit Gilroy: A Season-by-Season Guide

The main house on the private glamping estate in Gilroy on a clear day

Gilroy sits at the south end of the Santa Clara Valley, where the Bay Area starts to turn into farm country and rolling hills. It’s a year-round destination — the weather is mild and there’s something on in every season — but each part of the year has its own character. Here’s how to pick the right time for your trip.

Spring (March–May): green hills & waterfalls

Spring is arguably the prettiest time to visit. Winter rains leave the hills a brilliant green, wildflowers come out, and the waterfalls at Uvas Canyon are running their best — the short waterfall loop is a spring highlight. Days are comfortable (60s–70s °F), crowds are light, and it’s ideal for hiking, the wineries, and long evenings outside. A great all-around season.

Summer (June–August): warm days & garlic season

Summer is peak season and the classic time to come. Days are warm to hot (often 80s–90s °F) and evenings are long and mild — perfect for a hot tub under the stars, an outdoor movie, or a late BBQ. It’s also garlic season: Gilroy’s famous garlic festival is held on the last full weekend of July, a decades-old celebration of garlicky food, live music, and the legendary garlic ice cream. Summer books up fastest, so plan ahead — especially around the festival and holiday weekends.

Fall (September–November): the harvest & wine crush

Fall might be the sweet spot: the heat eases, the light turns golden, and the wine harvest is on across the Santa Clara Valley wine trail. Tasting rooms are lively with crush season, the vineyards look their best, and weekends are a little quieter than midsummer. Comfortable days and cool evenings make it a beautiful time for both the outdoors and the wineries.

Winter (December–February): quiet & low-key

Winter is the quiet season. Days are cool and often clear (50s–60s °F) with some rain, the hills start greening up, and everything is calmer and easier to book. It’s the best time for a cozy, low-key getaway — a soak in a heated hot tub, a fire, a game room, and no crowds. The outlets and indoor attractions are a natural fit for the occasional rainy day, and it’s a good stretch for finding better availability.

So when should you go?

  • For the best scenery: spring, for green hills and waterfalls.
  • For long, warm evenings and the garlic festival: summer.
  • For wine harvest and fewer crowds: fall.
  • For quiet and easier booking: winter.

The nice thing about staying somewhere with both indoor and outdoor space is that any season works. For more on what to do once you’re here, see our guide to things to do in Gilroy and our wine-country weekend itinerary.
